DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z AUGUST 29, 2008

Impacts of Western Fires:
Moderately dense smoke covered central Idaho, southern South Dakota and a
large portion of Nebraska. Thick smoke was observed in central Nebraska.
Light smoke shrouded portions of Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Wyoming,
Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas. The East Slide Rock Ridge, South Barker,
Gunbarrel, and Dunn Mtn. Assist fires were the primary sources of these
areas of smoke.

Light to moderate smoke was observed emanating from the Lonesome Complex
in Oregon.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
