DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z AUGUST 31, 2008

Montana, Idaho, Wyoming:
Cloud cover limits smoke detection but through the breaks in the clouds
it appears that there is less smoke than in the past couple of days.
Nevertheless, the South Barker fire in Idaho has a long narrow plume
of light smoke extending northeastward. The Dunn Mtn Assist fire in
Montana and the Gunbarrel fire in northwest Wyoming have plumes of light
to moderate smoke that also extend northeastward.

Northern California:
Fires in Siskiyou County and Yuba Counties are producing plumes of light
smoke that extend eastward or northeastward.

North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas:
Light remnant smoke from yesterday's Western fires mixed with haze can
be seen over the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas and the area is drifting
eastward. An area of moderate smoke is in north central South Dakota
and eastern North Dakota.

Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia:
Quasi-stationary light remnant smoke from previous days' Western fires
covers much of Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia, and
occasionally can also be discerned in neighboring states.

Alaska:
A fire in eastern Yukon-Koyukuk is producing a plume of light smoke that
extends eastward.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
