DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z SEPTEMBER 3, 2008

California/Oregon:
Several fires continue to burn in northwest California in Del Norte,
western Siskiyou and Trinity counties in the Shasta Trinity National
Forest, the Klamath National Forest and Six Rivers National Forest. The
smoke was locally dense near the fires and light to moderately dense
elsewhere. The smoke was moving to the south and had reached southern
Trinity county by sunset. A fire in eastern Fresno county in the Sequoia
National Forest near Dinkey Creek had a smoke plume that was fanning out
in several directions. The smoke locally dense near the blaze and light
to moderately dense elsewhere. The smoke extended across northern Inyo
county to the east and also spanned Fresno county in a narrow band from
Madera to Tulare counties.

Alaska:
A fire about 100 km northeast of Fort Yukon has a narrow plume of thin
smoke extending about 100 km to the southwest to near Fort Yukon.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
