DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z SEPTEMBER 5, 2008

Northern California:
Light smoke can be seen coming from the Siskiyou/Blue 2 Complex and the
Panther Fire. The smoke is fanned out over 150km to the west.

Oregon:
The Lonesome Complex continues to generate light smoke which is moving
to the southwest approaching the California border.

North central Plains:
An area of haze of unknown composition can be seen moving from Montana
and Wyoming into the Dakotas. This haze could be remnant SO2 from recent
volcanic eruptions or remnant smoke from yesterdays fires.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
