DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z SEPTEMBER 7, 2008

Oregon:
In Douglas and Klamath Counties, the Lonesome Complex and Rattle Fire are
both producing moderately dense to dense smoke. These smoke plumes are
moving to the southeast and merge in Klamath County, in the south-central
region of the state.

California/Nevada:
Several fires are producing moderately dense to dense smoke plumes in
Siskiyou, Del Norte, and Trinity Counties. The plumes, the Siskiyou/Blue
2 Complex and the Panther Fire especially, are generally moving to the
north and east. One plume earlier this afternoon, in Siskiyou County,
quickly moved to the east and is currently in north-central Nevada,
some 450km from the source. Also, the Tehipite Fire in eastern Fresno
County is producing moderately dense to dense smoke as it fans out over
most of the county, and moving south and west into Madera County.

Alaska:
A group of fires in the northeastern region of the state, near 67N
and 144W are producing light smoke plumes. The plumes are moving to
the northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
