DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0140Z SEPTEMBER 9, 2008

California:
In northern California the Siskiyou/Blue 2 Complex, Rattle, Deerhorn,
Elmore and Gulch fires continue to emit moderately dense to dense smoke.
This smoke is moving north and west with the heaviest smoke being in
Siskiyou and Del Norte counties and lighter smoke moving off shore.
The fire in eastern Monterey County is emanating light to moderately
dense smoke which is streaming northward covering over 100km in length
and 40km in width.

Oregon:
The Rattle Fire and Lonesome Complex in southeastern Oregon are generating
light to moderately dense smoke which is fanning out and moving to
the north.

Idaho:
In Elmore County there are fires, including the South Barker Fire, which
are producing light smoke which is moving to the north. In northern
Idaho there are several fires which are emitting smoke but passing clouds
inhibit the determination of density and extent.

Colorado:
Over 150km of light to moderately dense smoke can be seen extending to
the southeast from a fire located in west central Gunnison County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
