DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z SEPTEMBER 9, 2008

California:
In northern California the Siskiyou/Blue 2 Complex, Rattle, Deerhorn,
Elmore and Gulch fires in Del Norte, Siskiyou, and Trinity counties
continue to emit moderately dense to dense smoke over norther California
near the fires. This heavy smoke swirls about over northwest California
with lighter smoke being picked up by the winds and carried into south
central and east Oregon. Also there may be light smoke off the northern
California coast but it is obscured by cloud cover. The fire in eastern
Fresno county near Cedar Grove is producing light smoke in the valleys
near the fire and also stretches eastward into Inyo county and southwest
Nevada.

Oregon:
The Rattle Fire in southwestern Oregon is generating moderately dense
smoke which is stationary in eastern Douglas county. The Lonesome Complex
on the Klamath and Jackson county border is producing a thin plume of
moderately dense smoke within the Rogue River National Forest.

Colorado:
The smoke from the fire located in west central Gunnison County yesterday
has settled into a local valley and is relatively stationary.

Minnesota/Wisconsin/U.P. Of Michigan/Ontario/Manitoba:
Unknown aerosol, possibly SO2 from an Alaskan volcanic eruption, is
seen stretching from eastern Manitoba into southwest Ontario, northeast
Minnesota, the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, and eastern Wisconsin.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
