DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z SEPTEMBER 10, 2008

California:
In northern California, the Siskiyou/Blue 2 Complex and the Deerhorn,
Gulch, Panther and Elmore fires continue to emit moderately dense
to dense smoke which is covering much of the northern portion of the
state. The majority of the smoke is fanning out to the east extending
over 300km south of the California/Oregon border and approaching the
California/Nevada border to the east. Some smoke from the most western
fires is moving out to the Pacific but the extent of the smoke is obscured
by the marine cloud layer. There are several smaller fires near the
border of Butte and Sutter counties which are expelling discrete puffs
of light smoke which are traveling northward.

Oregon:
In eastern Douglas and Jackson counties there are fires which are
generating moderately dense to dense smoke which is moving to the south.
This smoke appears to merge with the smoke from the northern California
fires before beginning to move east.

Idaho:
In western Kootenai and Benewah counties there are small fires which are
emanating light to moderately dense smoke which is moving off to the east.

Montana:
A fire in the southern portion of Dawson County is emitting light to
moderately dense smoke which is moving to the east reaching the North
Dakota border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
