DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z SEPTEMBER 12, 2008

Northern California/Southern Oregon:
Heavy dense smoke emanated from fires in Oregon counties of Harney,
Umatilla, and Walla Walla as well as from the Blue 2/Siskiyou, Panther,
and Bear Wallow complexes in northern California. Light to moderate
smoke from these fires covered the southern two-thirds of Oregon,
northern California and extended into the Pacific up to 200 km.

Southern California:
The persistent blaze in eastern Fresno County generated isolated heavy,
but mainly light to moderate smoke that extended southwestward to
the coast.

Idaho:
Several fires in Clearwater and Idaho counties generated moderately
dense smoke that moved generally to the south.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
