DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z SEPTEMBER 19, 2008

Pacific Northwest and Southwest Canada to northern Great Plains:
A large area of mostly thin smoke originating from fires in western Oregon
and northern California extends north across the Pacific Northwest into
southern British Columbia. From there the smoke extends east across
the southern half of Alberta, southern third of Saskatchewan into far
southern Manitoba, eastern Montana and the Dakotas. Some of the smoke
can be moderately dense from British Columbia to North Dakota. The very
leading edge of the thin smoke may extend as far east as Minnesota to
southern Hudson Bay.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
