DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z SEPTEMBER 24, 2008




Southern California:

The Hidden fire in N Tulare county and unnamed fire along the N. Kings
River in E Fresno county are producing a plume of thin smoke extending
100 miles to the northwest.

Great Lakes region:

Widespread dispersed smoke is visible over much of the eastern Great
Lakes and Midwest.


Canada:

A band of thin smoke stretches from northern Alberta eastward toward
Lake Winnipeg.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
