DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z SEPTEMBER 27, 2008

Southeast US:
Numerous agricultural burns took place earlier this afternoon across
Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. These fires produced
light smoke plumes which were observed generally moving to the south. A
couple fires did produce moderately dense smoke plumes, especially in
Nevada County, Arkansas, extending into the rest of extreme southwestern
Arkansas and extreme northern Louisiana.

Kansas:
Several agricultural burns produced light smoke plumes across the state
this evening. These plumes extended to the north.

California:
In Siskiyou County, a light to moderately dense smoke plume is drifting
to the north, extending to the Oregon/California border.

Oregon:
Along the border of Lane and Douglas Counties, a moderately dense smoke
plume extends to the northeast at least 100km from its source into
eastern Lane County and western Deschutes/Jefferson Counties.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
