DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z SEPTEMBER 29, 2008

Lower to Mid-Mississippi Valley:
Numerous agricultural/prescribed burns along the Mississippi River in
Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana generated light smoke
plumes earlier this afternoon and evening. Most of these plumes were
moving to the south and southwest and each plume extended roughly
40-50km out.

California:
In Del Norte and Siskiyou counties, light to moderately dense smoke plumes
have been moving to the north and northwest through the course of the
afternoon into extreme southwestern Oregon (Curry, Josephine counties)
and out over the Pacific Ocean. Fires in Monterey and Fresno counties
also produced light to moderately dense smoke plumes throughout the
day. These plumes were generally moving to the north.

Oregon:
Moderately dense to dense smoke plumes in Jefferson, Lane, and Douglas
counties were observed moving to the north and extended out at least
100km from their sources. Smoke also moved into Linn County earlier this
evening from the fires in Lane/Douglas County.

Idaho:
A few fires in Clearwater County are producing light to moderately dense
smoke plumes this evening. These plumes are moving to the east and extend
out roughly 50 km from their sources.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
