DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z OCTOBER 2, 2008

Southeast US:
An incredible amount of agricultural burns and prescribed burns took
place this afternoon and evening over southeastern Missouri, most of
Arkansas, northern Louisiana, and east-central Kansas, producing light
smoke plumes. Most of these plumes were observed moving to the south and
extended out anywhere from 25km to 75km from their perspective sources.

Canada:
In southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba, numerous burns
took place this evening. Most plumes were light, and generally were seen
moving to the southeast extending out 50-75km from their sources.

California:
Before clouds moved in, a fire in Monterey County could be seen producing
a moderately dense to dense smoke plume over most of the county.

Arizona:
In Yavapai County, a moderately dense smoke plume is moving to the
southwest over the rest of the county, and extends out 50km into Maricopa
County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
