DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z OCTOBER 9, 2008
Southeast and Coastal Texas: Numerous fires were detected over southeast and coastal Texas this evening with several featuring smoke plumes that were mostly drifting off to the south/southeast. The most significant of these smoke plumes originated from fires over Brazoria and Matagorda counties. The smoke from these fires was moderately dense in areas and was drifting offshore into the western Gulf of Mexico. Another active fire and associated smoke plume was located over San Jacinto county. The moderately dense smoke plume extended from the point source into eastern Montgomery and western Liberty county. Southwest Kansas to the Texas Panhandle: A concentrated area of fires were detected this evening from southwest Kansas into the Texas Panhandle. Numerous fires in this region were producing thin to moderately dense smoke. Due to a surface frontal boundary draped through the region, the smoke plumes were fanning out in all directions. Southeast Washington and Northern Idaho: A large number of fires were detected over southeast Washington and to a greater extent over northern Idaho. Widespread cloud cover over the region greatly limited the analysis of smoke over the region with the exception of fire activity over Walla Walla and Columbia counties in Washington. The smoke from this fire activity was mostly lifting off to the north and was at most moderate in density. Hanna
