DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z OCTOBER 15, 2008

In early morning visible imagery only a faint broad area of smoke could
be seen moving offshore of Northern Los Angeles County from the San
Fernando Valley fires.
There is also a very narrow plume of moderate smoke moving off the coast
of southern Monterey county around 35 miles from a fire in the Los Padres
Nat. Forest southwest of King City.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
