DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z OCTOBER 17, 2008

Southern California:
The Chalk fire generated a heavy, dense plume of smoke extending 135
km west while moderately dense smoke from the fire in Mariposa County
fire extended 80 km to the north. Residual light smoke was noted across
southern and central California.

Northern California and Oregon:
A number of fires in northern California and southern Oregon were
producing moderately dense to heavy smoke that generally moved to the
east. Counties effected include Siskiyou, Shasta, Lassen, and Modoc in
California and Grant, Klamath, and Lake in Oregon.

Alabama:
Several ag fires generated light smoke that moved to the north and east.

Arizona:
Light to moderately dense smoke extended up to 60 km southwest of fires
in Coconino and Navajo counties.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
