DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z OCTOBER 21, 2008

Oregon:
In Lake County, a moderately dense smoke plume is moving to the east
and extends out 100km from its source.

California:
In Monterey County, a light to moderately dense smoke plume is moving
to the south over the Pacific Ocean. The plumes extends 300km from
its source.

Arizona:
A light to moderately dense smoke plume in Coconino County is moving to
the northeast and extends out 135km.

Southeast US:
Numerous light smoke plumes, with a few moderately dense smoke plumes as
well, were observed over east Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi,
and Alabama this afternoon. Most of the plumes only extended 30km or so
out from their sources, and moved in variable directions.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
