DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z OCTOBER 22, 2008

Georgia:
At the border of Jefferson and Glascock counties a fire is emitting
light smoke which is extends over 100km to the east reaching the South
Carolina border. Fires in Wilkinson, Stewart, Western and Sumter are
generating light smoke which is also moving to the east.

Alabama:
Many small smoke plumes can be seen throughout the southern portion of
Alabama with the greatest density of plumes near Wilcox and Clay counties.
These plumes are light in density and are flowing to the southwest.

Louisiana/Arkansas:
Many small agricultural burns across Louisiana and in southern Arkansas
are emanating discrete puffs of light smoke which are moving to the
northwest.

Arizona:
Light to moderately dense smoke from a fire near the Coconino and Gila
borders extends over 150km to the east as well as 200km to the south.
The smoke has covered most of Gila County and is now entering Pinal
County. In central Apache county, there are fires generating light
smoke which is moving off to the east crossing the border into New Mexico.

California:
The Chalk Fire continues to emit light to moderately dense smoke which
is moving to the south over the Pacific Ocean. In central Merced County
light smoke is moving south through Fresno County and into Kings County.
Light to moderately dense from a fire on the eastern border of Colusa
County is traveling to the south entering into Solano County.

Oregon:
A fire in central Coos County is generating light to moderately dense
smoke which is moving west off the coast. Another smoke plume originating
in the western portion of Douglas County is also moving west offshore.

Washington:
In central Yakima County, light to moderately dense smoke is moving to
the northeast but so far it is staying within the border of the county.

Canada:
In Ontario near Lady Lake, a plume of light smoke is moving to the south.
In western Ontario, near Lake Nipigon, a fire is emanating light smoke
which is traveling to the north east extending over 100km. North of
Red Lake light smoke can be seen moving to the north extending 50km.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
