DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z OCTOBER 28, 2008

Texas:
In Matagorda County, a moderately dense to dense smoke plume was moving
south across the Gulf of Mexico earlier this afternoon. The narrow plume
extended roughly 400km from the source. Also, several light smoke plumes
in the far eastern counties (along the coastline) were moving to the
south earlier this afternoon over the Gulf of Mexico as well. These
plumes extended out 200-250km from their sources.

Arkansas/Mississippi Valley:
Numerous agricultural burns this evening were observed producing light
smoke plumes across northeastern Arkansas especially. These plumes were
moving to the east and extended out 40-50km from their sources.

Oregon:
A moderately dense smoke plume in far northern Harney County is currently
moving to the northeast and extends out 75km from the point of origin.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
