DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z OCTOBER 30, 2008

Florida:
In the panhandle county of Santa Rosa, light smoke can be seen traveling
south out over the Gulf of Mexico.

Alabama:
Throughout south central Alabama there are multiple agricultural burns.
A few of these fires are emitting light smoke which is traveling to the
east.  The counties with smoke visible from satellite imagery include:
Bibb, Perry, Marengo, Clarke and Escambia.

Mississippi:
In central Tallamatchie County a fire is emanating light to moderately
dense smoke which is moving to the east through Grenada and Yalobusha
counties.  In southern counties of Marion and Pearl River, multiple
plumes of light smoke can be seen moving to the south.

Louisiana:
In southern Louisiana along the Mississippi River, there are many fires
generating light smoke which is moving to the southeast.  In the northern
Louisiana parishes of Natchitoches, Claiborne and Bienville light smoke
can be seen fanning out and moving to the northeast and entering into
Arkansas.

Arkansas:
Light smoke can be seen originating from the counties of Columbia and
Ouahita and moving to the northeast.

Texas:
On the Gulf Coast of Matagorda County light to moderately dense smoke
can be seen moving to the north.  In the northern panhandle of Texas
there are multiple small fires which are emitting discrete puffs of
smoke which are moving to the north.

New Mexico:
In Rio Arriba County there is light to moderately dense smoke moving
to the east extending over 100km nearly reaching Taos county.  Light to
moderately dense smoke is originating from the western portion of Torrance
and moving to the east.

Arizona:
There are two large fires in Coconino County which are generating
moderately dense to dense smoke which is moving to the east.

Utah:
In the northeastern corner of Washington County large amount of moderately
dense smoke are being generated and are then moving to the east through
Garfield and Kane counties.  In central Garfield and Sevier counties
fires are generating light smoke which is moving to the east.

Nevada:
In the northern portion of Nye County a fire is emanating light to
moderately dense smoke which is moving to the northeast passing through
Eureka County and entering into White Pine County.

California:
In Colusa County there are several fires which are emitting light smoke
which is traveling north.  In western Lassen County there is a large
amount of light smoke which is moving to the northeast.  In Shasta County
a fire is generating light to moderately dense smoke which is moving to
the north.

Idaho:
In the eastern portion of Elmore County light to moderately dense smoke
can be seen moving to the east extending over 150km.

Hawaii:
On the south side of the Big Island of Hawaii, a thin plume of light
smoke can be seen moving to the west.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
