DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z NOVEMBER 01, 2008

Kentucky:
The fire along the Leslie/Clay county line is producing a plume
of thin smoke that was moving due E in a 5-7km wide line to the
Perry/Lethcer/Harlam county intersection.

Georgia:
A fire in central Talbot county was producing thin smoke that moved SSW
into E Chattahoochee/W Marion county in a 7km wide line.

Alabama:
A fire in SW Shelby county is producing a thin smoke plume that first
started moving WSW but has shifted to SW and is about 10km wide as it
reaches the northern portions of Perry as it has covered most of Bibb
county at some point today.

S Louisiana:
A few agricultural fires along the southern lengths of the Mississippi
River south of Iberville parish. All fires produced small puffs of thin
smoke that moved SW around 15-20km in 3km wide plumes/puffs.
Numerous fires along the periphery of Vermillion Bay in Vermillion,
Iberia and St. Mary's parishes produced thin to moderate puffs/plumes
of smoke that have merged together into a larger area that covers all
of the Bay, Island and out to 25km offshore. The fires in Iberia were
particularly strong.

Mississippi River Valley (E AR/W MS/MO bootheel):
Tens of fires within the river valley of E AR/W MS and the MO bootheel
produced puffs of thin smoke. A particularly large concentration of
fires from SE Cross county, AR NE to New Madrid county, MO produced a
swath of thin to moderate smoke that extended the same length (and a
bit more to the Mississippi River in Scott county, MO) and was about
15-20km wide.

SE Texas:
A large fire on the coastal island of Matagorda county has been producing
a moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving both SW along the
intercoastal waters as well as a more dense plume moving N covering the
eastern 1/3rd of the county.

Texas Panhandle:
A fire in SC Castro county produced a strong puff of moderate to dense
smoke that covered a large portion of central, east Castro county and
into western Swisher as it moves due E and expands laterally (N and S)
as it goes.

A fire in S Apache county just a bit south of US-60 in the Apache Nat'l
forest was producing thin smoke that hugged the northern flanks of the
mtns as it slowly drifts NW along the length to the Navajo county line.
A NE moving plume could also be seen NE of a cloud line along the
slopes... extending along US-180/191 to just past St. Johns, AZ.

Alberta:
Two fires in the eastern portions of Banff Nat'l Park are producing plumes
of moderate smoke that are moving ENE in 10km wide plumes. Weather clouds
are moving in making further tracking difficult at this time.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
