DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z NOVEMBER 11, 2008

Florida:
A moderately dense smoke plume fanned out as it spread to the southwest
and out over the Gulf of Mexico from a fire in western Collier County of
southwestern Florida. At least 4 fires were emitting visible thin smoke
plumes in satellite imagery across the Florida panhandle which moved to
the south and over the Gulf of Mexico.

Southeastern US:
Numerous fires were analyzed across the Southeastern US from Louisiana
to the Carolinas. Nearly 2 dozen of these fires had smoke plumes which
were visible in satellite imagery. Widespread cloudiness approached
from the west during the afternoon which limited additional fire and
smoke detection especially across the middle and lower Mississippi Valley.

South Central Canada:
At least 3 smoke producing fires were detected in southwestern Ontario
Province of south central Canada. The smoke plumes, which were partially
obscured by clouds, were moving to the southeast toward northern Lake
Superior.

Pacific Northwest:
Quite a few fires were detected from western Oregon northward to British
Columbia in southwestern Canada. However, extensive cloudiness prevented
smoke detection in satellite imagery.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
