DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z NOVEMBER 11, 2008

A very cloudy day across nearly all of the US, N Mexico and S Canada
has obscured detection of smoke except for a few puffs of thin smoke.

North Carolina:
A fire in central Carteret county produced a puff of thin smoke that was
about 5km wide by 10km long that moved SSW offshore not more than 20km.

Alabama:
A fire on the central Butler and Crenshaw county line produced thin
smoke that moved WNW into cloudy conditions near SW Dallas county. The
plume was about 7km wide.

N Texas Panhandle:
A fire in far east central Hansford county produced a puff of thin smoke
that moved SSE into NW Roberts county and was about 5km wide.

Western Ontario:
Early in the afternoon a few smoke plumes could be seen moving N from
fires in the woodlands N of the Boundary Waters of MN, but clouds quickly
covered further detection by early evening.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
