DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z NOVEMBER 17, 2008

Southern California:
Fires in Los Angeles and Orange counties continued to burn through
the day and were responsible for a large mass of moderately dense to
dense smoke which spread westward and well off the coast of southern
California. Farther to the south, a moderately dense smoke plume from
a fire over far northwestern Baja, close to the border with southern
California(San Diego County), fanned out as it moved to the west-northwest
and offshore.

Oregon:
Several fires scattered across portions of Douglass, Coos, and Curry
counties of southwestern Oregon produced moderately dense to very
localized dense smoke which moved mainly in a northeasterly direction
during the day.

Louisiana:
Numerous fires were detected across the southern third of Louisiana. At
least a dozen smoke plumes of mainly thin density were observed moving
to the south-southeast from these fires.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
