DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z NOVEMBER 18, 2008

Florida:
Light smoke can be seen originating south of Lake Okeechobee and
drifting slowly to the south.  There is also a plume of light smoke
extending from the border of St. John's and Flagler counties east over
the Atlantic Ocean.  Light to moderately dense smoke is coming from a
fire in central Liberty County and moving south into the Gulf of Mexico.
In the western panhandle of Florida there are several plumes of light
smoke which are moving south.

Alabama:
In the area of Marengo County, several fires are emitting light smoke
which is moving to the east.

Louisiana:
There are several small plumes of light smoke in southern Louisiana
near the Mississippi delta.  There is a large fire near of the coast
of Cameron Parrish which is generating light to moderately dense smoke
which is moving south over the Gulf of Mexico.

California:
Light smoke can be seen over the Pacific near the southern coast of
California.  In the last few images of the day, it appears that the
smoke has begun to north and east back inland over southern California.

Mexico:
On the Pacific Coast of the northern Baja Peninsula there is moderately
dense to dense smoke moving to the west over the Pacific Ocean.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
