DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z DECEMBER 6, 2008

Oregon:
A fire in SE Coos county, OR is producing a line of thin to moderate
smoke that extends toward the NW but is directly under the center of
the High pressure so in time is turning clockwise toward the S.

Arizona:
A few fires across central AZ have thin associated puffs or plumes of
smoke that remain within local valleys within 25km of their respective
sources. Smoke movement is directly affected by local scale affects.
Locations and smoke motion include: 1)In the NE portion of the Weaver
Mtns. of S Yavapai county, motion toward the SW. 2)In the Mazatzal Mtns
of far E Gila county, motion toward S. 3&4)In far S Apache county White
Mtns. with motion toward the E.

Florida:
Numerous fires south and southeast of Lake Okeechobee produced puffs of
thin smoke that could be only detected in visible imagery while over
the Lake due to the dark background color. These puffs moved quickly
NW and at times throughout the day covered the lake.

Oklahoma:
A fire in far W McCurtain county (along the jags in the Pushmataha county
line) produced a very thin line of thin smoke that extended a few kms
into Pushamataha toward the NNW.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
