DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z DECEMBER 11, 2008

Arizona:
Several fires were analyzed across the region stretching from near Payson
in central Arizona to south of Eagar in east central Arizona. At least
3 of these fires were producing relatively thin density smoke plumes
which moved mainly in a southerly direction during the day.

California:
A fire in south central Tulare County of south central California was
responsible for a thin to moderately dense smoke plume which spread
eastward while also fanning out to the north and south. A fire near
Monterey and Seaside in northwestern Monterey County produced a smoke
plume of primarily thin density which moved to the east.

Oregon:
At least 8 fires with visible moderately dense smoke plumes were analyzed
extending from Curry County of far southwestern Oregon to Lake County
of south central Oregon. The smoke plumes over Lake and Klamath counties
of south central Oregon moved to the southeast while the plumes closer
to the coast in Curry County moved to the southwest and eventually over
the Pacific.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
