DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z DECEMBER 12, 2008

Texas:
Several fires along the gulf coast of Texas produced light smoke plumes
which extended to the southeast roughly 100km from their sources. One
moderately dense smoke plume in particular, in Aransas County, was
observed moving off to the southeast as well, and extended out 75-100km
from its source.

California:
In the far northwestern part of the state, in Del Norte County, a
moderately dense smoke plume was observed moving to the south into
northern Humboldt County earlier this evening. The plume extended 30km
from the source. In El Dorado County, a small, moderately dense smoke
plume was seen moving to the north and extended out 10km from its source
earlier this evening.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
