DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z DECEMBER 18, 2008

Florida:
A fire E of Jerome in SE Collier county in the Big Cypress Nat'l Preserve
produced strong puffs of thin to moderate smoke that drifted SSW into
the Gulf and was about 12-15km wide.
Thin smoke in a 15-20km wide plume moving W most likely came from a
fire in near the NW corner of Collier county in Hendry county (NE of
Immokalee), though it may have been from a fire in S Charlotte county
but due to scattered cumulus clouds which fire cannot be confirmed.
A fire along the S Okaloosa/Santa Rosa county line on the western portion
of Eglin AFB, produced thin smoke that moved in a 10-15km wide line due
N to the FL/AL state line.
A small puff of thin smoke could be seen moving NNE from a fire in NE
Columbia county and moved into extreme S Clinch and Ware counties.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
