THROUGH 0115Z DECEMBER 21, 2008

South Dakota:
A large fire was spotted earlier this afternoon along the border of Meade
and Pennington counties producing a light smoke plume. The plume extended
to the south and south east about 45-50km from the source. The smoke plume
was very difficult to see due to the snow pack on the ground however.

Florida:
Several fires around Lake Okeechobee earlier this afternoon were producing
light smoke plumes extending to the north and northeast into Palm Beach
County. These plumes extended 35-40km from their sources.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
