DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z DECEMBER 28, 2008

Florida:
A number of what are believed to be primarily agricultural fires were
detected to the south and southeast of Lake Okeechobee in southern
Florida. Several puffs of thin smoke were visible from these fires moving
to the northwest and across Lake Okeechobee.

Texas/Oklahoma:
The blowing dust seen earlier in the day over western and central Texas
was no longer visible. Widely scattered fires were analyzed across
southern Oklahoma as well as northern and central Texas during the
day. Very long narrow smoke plumes of mainly thin to perhaps locally
moderate density were visible with the fires in Jefferson County of
south central Oklahoma as well as Jack and southern Parker Counties of
north central Texas. Gusty westerly winds were rapidly blowing the smoke
plumes to the east quite a distance away from the fires.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
