DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z DECEMBER 28, 2008

Florida:
A number of what are believed to be primarily agricultural fires were
detected to the south and southeast of Lake Okeechobee in southern
Florida. Several puffs of thin to moderately dense smoke were visible
from these fires which combined to form a somewhat larger area that
moved to the northwest and across Lake Okeechobee.

Georgia:
A developing moderately dense to even locally dense smoke plume was
observed moving to the north from a fire in northern Liberty County of
southeastern Georgia.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
