DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z DECEMBER 29, 2008

Florida:
Numerous fires, believed to be mainly agricultural burns, were analyzed
to the south and southeast of Lake Okeechobee. Many puffs of thin to
moderately dense smoke were visible moving to the northwest over Lake
Okeechobee during the afternoon. The smoke plumes combined to form a
bit larger batch of leftover thin smoke which continued to move to the
northwest into central Florida, just south of Lakeland prior to sunset.

Georgia:
Moderately dense to even locally dense smoke was observed moving to the
north-northeast from at least 2 fires in Liberty County of southeastern
Georgia. A smaller and thinner smoke plume was also moving to the
north-northeast from a nearby fire in eastern Tattnall County. Leftover
smoke of thin density from these fires spread into extreme southern
South Carolina by late in the afternoon.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
