DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JANUARY 10, 2009

Southeast US:
Numerous agricultural burns took place this afternoon over Alabama,
northern Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, producing light smoke
plumes. Due to variable winds, the plumes extended in all different
directions with most plumes moving towards the east, and extending out
between 30-45km from their sources.

Florida:
In Okaloosa County, a light to moderately dense smoke plume was observed
moving to the north into southern Alabama, Escambia and Covington
counties, and the plume extended out roughly 90km from its source.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
