DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z JANUARY 14, 2009

Florida:
Several plumes of light smoke are originating in the western portion of
the Florida Panhandle and extending to the southeast.

Louisiana:
Along the Gulf Coast of Louisiana several fires are emitting large plumes
of light smoke which are fanning out to the south over the Gulf of Mexico.
There is a plume of light smoke which originates along the border of
Vernon and Natchitoches Parishes and extends over 180km to the south
approaching the Gulf Coast.

Texas:
A fire in Jefferson County is generating light smoke which is traveling
to the south over the Gulf of Mexico.  Along of coast of Calhoun County
a fire is emitted a discrete plume of light smoke which traveled to
the south and them began emitting more light smoke later in the day.
The smoke from the initial puff has traveled over the Gulf of Mexico
and is approaching land past the Texas/Mexico border.  Along the north
coast of Kenedy County smoke is fanning out to the south covering 30km in
width and 130km in length approaching the Texas/Mexico border.  In the
southern portion of Kenedy County, a plume of light to moderately dense
smoke is extending to the south and entering into Mexico.

California:
On the west coast of Humboldt County two fires are emanating light smoke
which is extending to the west over the Pacific Ocean.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
