DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z JANUARY 16, 2009

Southeast US:
There are several small plumes of light smoke in the states of Georgia,
Florida (panhandle), Alabama and Mississippi.

Louisiana/Texas:
Throughout the western portion of Louisiana and the eastern portion of
Texas several fires are emitting long plumes of light smoke which are
moving the the southwest.

California:
In the area south of the Salton Sea several fires are generating light
smoke which is moving to the south into Mexico.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
