DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z JANUARY 16, 2009

Southeast US:
There are several small plumes of light smoke in the states of South
Carolina, Georgia, Florida (panhandle), Alabama, Mississippi and
Louisiana.

Louisiana:
On the southern coast of Louisiana there are two fires generating light
to moderately dense smoke which is moving south over the Gulf of Mexico.

Oregon:
In Curry and Coos counties there are several fires which are emitting
light to moderately dense smoke which is moving to the west.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
