DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2300Z JANUARY 24, 2009

Florida:
Several small plumes of light smoke were seen this morning around Lake
Okeechobee in western Palm Beach and northeast Hendry counties. The
plumes drifted to the north and dissipated.

Arkansas/southern Missouri/Oklahoma:
A large number of fires were detected across the region this afternoon
and evening with several smoke plumes. The plumes mainly moved to the
south and were mainly light in density. The most notable smoke was a
thick plume from a fire in southwest Montgomery county in southwest
Arkansas. This plume drifted to the southwest into Howard and Sevier
counties. Other plumes were seen from fires in southern Baxter and
western Searcy counties in Arkansas, northwest Ozark county in Missouri
and Latimer county in eastern Oklahoma.

Alberta Canada:
A fire in southwest Alberta, northwest of Calgary, had a plume of
moderately dense smoke that was moving to the south and southeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
