DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH


Southwest US:
Several areas of blowing dust were seen over parts of Utah, California
and Nevada ahead of a storm system that is bringing strong winds to the
region. Areas of blowing dust were observed over eastern Millard county
in Utah, Churchill and Esmeralda counties in Nevada and Inyo county in
California. The dust was all lifting to the northeast.

Great Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley:
A tremendous number of fires were detected over eastern Kansas and
eastern Oklahoma. This has resulted in a large number of smoke plumes
that have merged together into a larger mass of smoke that covered much
of the region by sunset and was drifting to the east and northeast into
western Missouri. Additional smoke was seen with fires over east Texas,
Louisiana and Arkansas. Graphics of these plumes are depicted at the

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
