DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH

Southeastern New Mexico/Western Texas:
New swaths of rather significant blowing dust were visible this morning
extending from southeastern New Mexico eastward across western Texas,
including Lubbock and Midland.

Central Plains:
A combination of residual blowing dust and smoke from yesterday's
significant blowing dust event over the Southwest and major agricultural
burning over eastern Kansas and eastern Oklahoma was visible this morning
over eastern Colorado, southwestern Nebraska, western and central Kansas,
western Oklahoma, and extreme northwestern Texas. This combination of
smoke and blowing dust was wrapping in a cyclonic direction around a
low pressure system located along the border of southwestern Kansas and
Northwestern Oklahoma.

Elsewhere:
Goes-East visible imagery did not appear to show any significant
leftover smoke from yesterday's large number of fires detected across
the Southeastern U.S. although the National Weather Service Air Quality
Smoke Forecast Guidance does indicate a band of leftover smoke extending
from the area of smoke/blowing dust over the Central Plains described
above southeastward to off the GA/SC/FL coast. More residual smoke was
forecast to be along and off the Mid-Atlantic coast. The link for the
NWS Forecast Guidance page can be found at...

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
