DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z June 21, 2009

Canada/Alaska:
A hazy area which is likely remnant SO2 from the emissions of the volcano,
Sarychev-Peak, can be seen throughout Canada and Alaska.  Large areas
of likely SO2 extend through northwestern Alaska and into Canada.
The majority of the territories within Canada are being effected by the
aerosols; however, the full extent of the coverage cannot be determined
due to cloud cover.

Southern US:
The states of Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and
Mississippi are under the cover of a haziness which is likely remnant
smoke from the previous days fires throughout the Lower Mississippi
Valley.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
