DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z June 24, 2009

North Central Gulf of Mexico:
A remnant plume of thin smoke from last night's fire along the coastal
portions of Mobile county, AL, can be seen moving due south over the
northern Gulf of Mexico about 90km off the AL coast and 90km east of the
mouth of the Missisippi River. The plume is about 40km wide and extends
N to S about 100km.

Lower Mississippi and Red River Valleys:
Remnant thin smoke from numerous agricultural fires from the MO bootheel
and across AR/LA can be seen at the extreme sun angles of Goes-West but
is also dense enough to be seen on Goes-East. The thickest (though thin)
areas cover much of N LA and AR.

SO2:
A large area of SO2 from the Sarychev Peak eruption can be seen across
nearly all of Canada and NE MT, ND and N MN. The most dense area is
oriented NW-SE ahead (NE) of large upper low coming into BC, and covers
far NE BC, across central Alberta, S Saskatchewan. The plume is thin
to moderately dense across S Mantioba, N Ontario across James Bay into
W Quebec. Small pockets of thin So2 can be seen in the upper low over
the Gulf of Alaska that is arcing the So2 along the NE quadrant over S
Alaska from Anchorage along the SE coast to Cape St. Elias.

More information on additional areas of smoke associated with these
fires and others can be found at the locations listed below.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
