DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1525Z July 15, 2009

Alaska/Northwest Territories:
Some residual smoke, possibly mixed in with some SO2, is situated over
the northern region of Alaska. Farther to the south and east, in the
Northwest Territories, there is also some light smoke present in the
southern region of the province. Because of extensive cloud cover,
a lot of the smoke cannot be seen.

Canada/Northern US:
A small area of what appears to be SO2 is situated over northern Alberta
and northern Manitoba. The SO2 also appears to extend south into the
Dakotas.

California:
Some residual light smoke in the northern region of the state, mostly
in Shasta County, is slowly drifting off to the east.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
