DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z July 27, 2009

Alaska/Territories:
FROM EARLIER...
Residual light smoke is still moving through central and eastern Alaska
into the northern region of the Northwest Territories. Because of
extensive cloud cover over the area, it is difficult to differentiate
between clouds and smoke. Nonetheless, there is a good amount of at
least lightly dense smoke over the areas described.

Canada:
In northern British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, possible light
smoke and aerosols are currently moving to the south. The possible light
smoke would be due to the wildfires in Alaska.

Washington/Oregon:
Light haze and/or aerosols are situated over the region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
