DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0345Z August 03, 2009

Alaska and Western/Central Canada/Northwest US/Northern and Central
Plains:
The wildfires in Alaska, Yukon Territory, and British Columbia continue
to produce a very large area of moderately dense to dense smoke across
parts of
Alaska, western/central Canada and northern/central US.  The leading
edge of the dense smoke has made it as far southeast as the Dakotas and
also covered large sections of Montana, Idaho and Washington and northern
Oregon.  At sunset a thin area of smoke associated with the leading edge
of the larger smoke plume was approaching the eastern Great Lakes and
extended down the western side of the Appalachian Mountain chain.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
