DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z August 22, 2009

Upper Midwest/Plains/Rockies:
Residual light to moderate smoke from fires in the Pacific Northwest
and British Columbia was moving southward across southern Ontario into
portions of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri. A thin ribbon of
residual light smoke stretched from south central South Dakota across
central Nebraska into central Kansas. An area of light smoke was also
noted across portions of Wyoming. Fires across Utah may have also
contributed to these last two areas.

British Columbia/Alberta
An area of moderate smoke could be found in central Alberta within a
larger area of light smoke that stretched to the southwest to the fires
in British Columbia.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
