DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z September 7, 2009

Great Lakes:
Residual smoke from fires in BC over the last week has become very faint
and is very difficult to discern from hazy conditions across the western
Great Lakes into the Red River Valley.  Convergence of flow is leading to
consolidation of these hazy pockets within anticyclonic flow across MN,
IA, IL and WI.  The most dense area can be seen moving due northalong
Red River between ND/MN into Ontario.

SE Canada:
Residual smoke from fires in BC over the last week is moving SSE ahead of
band of clouds covering much of New Brunswick, the Gulf of St. Lawrence
and Newfoundland. The clouds have been overrunning the smoke to the
point it was nearly obscured by sundown.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
