DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 12, 2009

Western Canada:
Several fires in southern British Columbia Province of southwestern
Canada flared up significantly this afternoon resulting in dense smoke
plumes which spread rapidly to the northeast. Some detached smoke also
from the ongoing fires in southern British Columbia was visible late
this afternoon moving to the north across central and northern British
Columbia and west central Alberta province.

Southern California/Northwestern Baja:
Thin smoke from a fire in northwestern Baja fanned out to the northeast
and southeast during the afternoon. Some of the smoke moved into eastern
San Diego County, just southwest of the Salton Sea. A relatively small
patch of blowing dust also originating in northwestern Baja moved into
the same general area of southern California during the late afternoon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
