DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z March 22, 2010

Texas:

Fires over southeast Calhoun county, near Port O'Conner, and over
southern Jefferson county, near the Intracoastal Waterway, were producing
moderately dense smoke plumes that were drifting southeast over the
northwest Gulf of Mexico. Elsewhere, areas of blowing dust/sand
originating from western Nueces and eastern San Patricio county was
drifting southeast into the northwest Gulf of Mexico.

Northern and Central Plains to the Western Great Lakes:

The area of what was believed to be thin smoke that was analyzed over
the northern and central Plains and western Great Lakes this morning,
has become quite difficult to discern this evening.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
